Laura Ross Wolcott
Laura Ross Wolcott, First Woman Physician in Wisconsin and Suffragist. Laura Ross, MD, came to the edge of the frontier in 1857. At first rejected for membership in the Milwaukee City Medical Society, she persevered and worked as a consulting physician at the Industrial School for Girls and the Convent of Notre Dame. As her reputation grew, she gained admission, with the backing of Dr. Erastus Wolcott, later to become her husband. Because of her struggles for acceptance, she became a strong supporter of women’s rights and a founding member of the Wisconsin Women’s Suffrage Association.
