Rohn's Swimming School
Rohn's Swimming School, First in the Nation, Bohemian immigrant Julius Rohn arrived in Milwaukee in 1855 and made his fortune through establishing a swimming school on the West Bank of the Milwaukee Eicer near the North Avenue Bridge. Learning to swim meant being strapped to a harness and suspended in the water attached to a rope on a pole, held by the teacher shouting instructions.
